Statement:
From 1998 onwards Paul Smulders investigated in his own way the boundaries between
the photographic and the painted image.
With the aid of photocopies he transformes photographs into screen patterns.
Such “transfers” and painted sections were alternately put on top of another,
resulting in layered images.
The introduction of new picture elements and graphic forms finds its counterpart
in a renewed passion for painting itself. Although he also uses oil colours and
spray paints, the painter uses above all (industrial) acrylic paint. Most of the time he will
paint wet into wet without caring that particular paints react aggressively to one
another and the mixture seems to curdle, but he knows how to use these
unpredictable reactions to his advantage.

Paul Smulders (f. 1962) har skabt en ny serie af værker som er konstant eksperimenterende og evigt afsøgende nye muligheder i maleriet. Der er skarp kontrast mellem grundens udflydende farver, og de ovenpå liggende transferprint med urbane motiver. Grænsen mellem print og maling bliver udvisket når motiverne bliver indarbejdet i maleriet. Dermed bliver billedfladen for beskueren en del af en større og utømmelig fortælling.
Paul Smulders’ malerier afspejler den omgivende verden, hvor mennesket er en lille brik i et langt større sammensat spil, og hvor menneskets handlinger kan tolkes på flere niveauer. Paul Smulders’ pastose malerier fortæller også forskellige historier alt efter om beskueren er tæt på eller langt fra maleriet. Kunstnerens urbane scene sætter det ansigtsløse menneske ind i sammenhænge, hvor figurerne ikke altid har et valg, men er del af noget større.
