About Michael Isling Isling says about his own paintings: My paintings are dealing with public spaces, so called non-spaces. Rooms which are normally considered transit-spaces, such as waiting-rooms, stations or for example the inside of a bus. In some paintings I’m trying to describe the atmosphere, while I in others try to deconstruct the obvious space. One of the ways I’m doing it is by mixing reality and an explosive colouring. The painting is about an exploration of space and meaning.

GROUND
galleri NB Roskilde is proud to open the exhibition Ground with the young artist Michael Isling Saturday the 27th of September 14-16. At the opening the exhibition will be presented by the artist himself. The exhibition Ground has focus on the non-spaces and on the dialogue which exists between culture and nature. The works base themselves in several travels in Asia, where Isling tried to capture an understanding and a sense of space, an understanding which he has been working with for many years. In the exhibition non-spaces is characterized by the fact that manmade constructions is left and subsequently taken over by nature. Isling has among other doings found hotel in Cambodia, abandoned since the French left the country in 1952, and inhabited it for a night. The hotel became in time dilapidated and the plants of the jungle has been dominating the hotel and it’s once so luxurious surroundings. This is the space Isling is drawn to. He moves with his own words between the strange, the uncontrollable and a recognition of the actual spaces. The works of Isling is described by the art historian Mads Damsbo as “a transient space between coming into existence and decay”. Isling is seeking an aesthetic expression which is mixed with the spectators own recognition of the architectural space. The artistic expression of Michael Isling becomes even more stylized than the reality of which they come. The meeting between the abandoned and the appropriated is an eternal longing for a feeling of solidarity with the world that we live in and the world that we meet. Besides the paintings and the collages there is an installation, which Isling has placed in the center of the room. The spectator is met by dirt, plants and flickering sights from Islings travels. The photos are accompanied by the sounds of the jungle which gives you the sensation of heat and met you with the same condensed atmosphere Isling was met by while travelling in the jungle. Michael Isling (f.1978) graduated this spring from The Art Academy of Fyn. In several years Isling has been a part of the Danish art scene as one of the younger artists, who has the courage to detach himself from the crowd. He has participated in several censored exhibitions, among them SPRING-08 and Ung Kunst i Malmø
