----------------------------------- Anatomy of catastrophe The painter Mette Rishøj does not pull her punches. Her paintings are ripe with speed and action. Machines are battering reality, disrupting harmony. Excavators are working overtime. Huge oil platforms are spewing out fire. It crackles, roars and sparkles. Modern life is a brutal construction and merciless destruction. Now, as always, art is here to document what happens around us.
The rough paintings of Mette Rishøj are in no way a keepers items. Especially not of you are expecting neatness and discreet aesthetics. The dramatics of the paintings are violent. They carve into the view of the spectator; their disharmony seems deliberate. Really, they are warnings: Everyday is as bad as this. Every change in our environment is a small disaster. Before a new thing can be created, something old has to be destroyed. But who says what is new is better?
This question and many more, spin into mind as you watch her spectacular paintings. The motifs are confined to a masculine universe with hullabaloo the jingle of the day. You might say that she challenges the dominant faith in a future being as blind as it is widespread.
But there are many more at stake in her universe. Mette Rishøj had her debut at the Spring Exhibition at Charlottenborg in 2005, and has already shown a considerable talent for painting, since she first graduated from the Art School of Ærø. She is never simple in her expression. There are many layers in her dynamic pictures. There is what we see and there is everything else: Moods, confrontations, pain; and the remorseless passing of time. From construction to deconstruction. Subtle and yet roaring at the same time.
The artist is taken in by machines and buildings; and by the architecture of the metropolises. The world is a construction, crackling and banging, whispering and howling. You get the thought that humans with soft bodies irreversibly must get caught in these constructions of steel, concrete, glass and other materials making up the corpus of cities and progress.
The paintings of Mette Rishøj are not for the novice. They make demands of the spectator. They challenge you and provoke you. But they are also grand in their own rough way.
The drawings play a key role in her way of building up a painting. And again, she goes about it in an unconventional way. Her sense of composition, though, is certain, and she has got an eye for contrasts. We can expect plenty of more good stuff from her hand.
